Layers Integration Summary
This document summarizes the integration of neural network layers into the C-ML codebase.
Integration Status: Complete
All layers, training metrics, and visualization UI have been properly integrated into the build system and main API.
Build System Integration
Makefile
Updated - Added all layer source files to NN_SOURCES:
src/nn/layers/linear.csrc/nn/layers/activations.csrc/nn/layers/dropout.csrc/nn/layers/conv2d.csrc/nn/layers/batchnorm2d.csrc/nn/layers/pooling.csrc/nn/layers/sequential.c
Updated - Added build directory creation for build/nn/layers/
Updated - Added automatic subdirectory creation in build rules
CMakeLists.txt
Updated - Added all layer source files to NN_SOURCES set
Build System - Both Makefile and CMakeLists.txt now properly include all layer sources
API Integration
Main Header (cml.h)
Updated - Changed from including nn/layers/linear.h to including unified nn/layers.h
This means users can now include cml.h and get access to all layers:
#include "cml.h"
// All layers are now available
Linear *fc = nn_linear(10, 20, DTYPE_FLOAT32, DEVICE_CPU, true);
ReLU *relu = nn_relu(false);
Sequential *model = nn_sequential();
Unified Layers Header
Created - include/nn/layers.h provides access to all layers:
- Includes all individual layer headers
- Provides convenience macros for layer creation
- Single include point for all layers

Build Verification
Compilation Check
No linter errors - All files pass linting checks
Build Commands
# Using Makefile
make clean
make
# Using CMake
mkdir build && cd build
cmake ..
make
Both build systems should now successfully compile all layers.
Training Metrics Integration
Training Metrics API
The training metrics system is fully integrated with automatic capture:
- Header:
include/Core/training_metrics.h - Implementation:
src/Core/training_metrics.c - Automatic Initialization: Global metrics initialized in
cml_init() - Automatic Capture: Metrics captured automatically during training
- Optimizer Integration:
optimizer_step()automatically captures LR and gradient norm - Loss Integration:
tensor_backward()automatically captures loss values
Usage
#include "cml.h"
#include "Core/cleanup.h"
int main(void) {
CleanupContext *cleanup = cleanup_context_create();
cml_init(); // Automatically initializes global metrics tracking
// Create model and optimizer
Sequential *model = nn_sequential();
// ... add layers ...
cleanup_register_model(cleanup, (Module*)model);
training_metrics_register_model((Module*)model);
Parameter **params;
int num_params;
module_collect_parameters((Module*)model, ¶ms, &num_params, true);
cleanup_register_params(cleanup, params);
Optimizer *optimizer = optim_adam(params, num_params, 0.01f, ...);
cleanup_register_optimizer(cleanup, optimizer);
training_metrics_set_expected_epochs(100);
// Training loop - metrics are automatically captured!
for (int epoch = 0; epoch < 100; epoch++) {
optimizer_zero_grad(optimizer); // Automatically detects new epoch
Tensor *outputs = module_forward((Module*)model, X);
Tensor *loss = tensor_mse_loss(outputs, y);
tensor_backward(loss, NULL, false, false); // Automatically captures loss
optimizer_step(optimizer); // Automatically captures LR and gradient norm
// ... cleanup ...
}
// Metrics are automatically exported on cml_cleanup()
cleanup_context_free(cleanup);
cml_cleanup(); // Automatically exports final metrics
return 0;
}

// Create model
Sequential *model = nn_sequential();
sequential_add(model, (Module*)nn_linear(10, 20, DTYPE_FLOAT32, DEVICE_CPU, true));
sequential_add(model, (Module*)nn_relu(false));
// Collect parameters
Parameter **params = NULL;
int num_params = 0;
module_collect_parameters((Module*)model, ¶ms, &num_params, true);
// Create optimizer
Optimizer *optimizer = optim_adam(params, num_params, 0.001f, 0.0f, 0.9f, 0.999f, 1e-8f);
// Training loop
